Sea Scallops

Scallops share a two-part shell with a hinge and foot, though they have no true head. All are filter feeders, requiring food designed for these types of invertebrates. If they are threatened, they can escape using water propulsion by clapping their valves together.

Red Flame Scallops
Lima scabra
Description: Besides being interesting to look at in your reef aquarium, Flame Scallops are very beneficial as well, by helping you keep your water clean by lowering Nitrates as they feed. The flame scallop or rough fileclam, Lima scabra, is a marine bivalve mollusc in the family Limidae. Although their name would suggest otherwise, flame scallops have no relation to scallops, besides their exterior. Flame scallops have a rough outer shell with a red mantle. Surrounding the mantle are red and white tentacles. The gills are used for respiration and filtration. The flame scallop's vibrant red color is due to the large amount of carotenoids found within their body. Flame scallops can reach a maximum size of about 3 inches long. When the Flame Scallops senses danger it simply pushes its valves together to propel titself away from the dangerous situation using water to create a jet impulse.

Diet: The flame scallops eats by filtering the sea water. During the consumption process, flame scallops sift and sort through the sea water with their gills to determine what is appropriate for ingestion. In an aquarium flame scallops require excellent water quality and either frequent water changes or the addition of an invertebrate food containing phytoplancton is recommended.
Reef Compatability: Excellent in a fully seasoned reef aquarium.

 Electric Flame Scallop
Description: The Electric Flame Scallop is a sub-species of the Flame Scallop. It has the same bright red mantle as the flame scallop, but it also has a strip of bio-luminescent tissue on its mantle that sends a flash of color back and forth over the mantle. This bio-luminescent tissue is bright enough to be seen at night and is what gives the scallop its name.
Diet:Because flame scallops have no photosynthetic properties, the flame scallops eat only phytoplankton filtered from the ocean water. During the consumption process, flame scallops sift and sort through the phytoplankton with their gills to determine what is appropriate for ingestion. In an aquarium flame scallops require excellent water quality and either frequent water changes for fresh food or the addition of an invertebrate food containing phytoplancton. T
