Cephalopods

Octopuses are highly
intelligent, by far the most intelligent known invertebrates,
and are able to learn how to distinguish the difference between
colors and shapes. More impressive is that they can remember
the shapes and colors and their meanings for up to two years.
An octopus can also learn how to unscrew the lid of a jar with
its arms, and the octopus called Einstein at the British Blue
Reef Aquarium could open a tin within seconds with two arms,
opening it even faster if it was filled with food. |

Octopus
sp.

The Caribbean Octopus are brown
with white spots when they are in a neutral mood. The body of
the Octopus can change color to blend in with any background.
For an Octopus to do best in an aquarium , it needs plenty of
live rock and ample hiding places and a large area in which to
move. The Octopus can be surprisingly strong, so in the home
aquarium, it is best to anchor the rocks, or even glue them together
to keep the Octopus from toppling the rocks into the glass or
onto itself. The ideal lighting for this aquarium is dim actinic
lighting. (It prefers low lighting levels.) Cover all tank openings
very well or it will escape. The Octopus is sensitive to water
quality and will not tolerate copper-based medications. Very
difficult to acclimate into a new environment, always approach
the Octopus slowly to avoid causing it to release its ink cloud
in defense. In the aquarium, this release of ink will necessitate
a large water change to avoid its death. The Octopus can be fed
shrimp and crab meat. It will also eat live feeder shrimp. Approximate
